Product Insights
Renold Round Sunglasses by Le 31 deliver a one-size metal frame with adjustable bridge and temples for a secure, comfortable fit on various face shapes, while the metal hinge enhances durability over plastic and plastic accents reduce weight and nose pressure. They provide 100% UV protection blocking UVA/UVB up to 380nm (not full UV400), with protection from the coating independent of lens darkness. At $29, the frame offers adjustability typical of premium frames, and as a Simons exclusive designed in Canada, they balance value against a UV coverage limitation.

Deep Research
What the one-size fit actually means
- The use of a metal front (as opposed to full acetate) means the bridge and temple arms can be adjusted by an optician or carefully at home to achieve a personalized fit, making the one-size approach viable across a range of face widths and nose shapes.
Le 31 as Simons’ in-house label
- Le 31 positions its accessories, including sunglasses, at a uniform $29 CAD price point across style variations — an intentional 'entry price' strategy that encourages low-risk shape sampling, turning each pair into an affordable fashion test-drive.
- The 'designed in Canada' tag reinforces that the silhouette was chosen or developed by Simons' creative team, not pulled from a common factory catalog — injecting a dose of Montreal fashion point-of-view into a mass-market price tier.
- Le 31 is a proprietary brand of La Maison Simons — the Quebec-based department store — and sold nowhere else, meaning these sunglasses are a direct in-house creation that skips third-party brand licensing to deliver a styled look at an accessible price.
- Unlike many ultra-affordable sunglasses that omit UV filtering, Le 31 makes 100% UV protection a stated feature on every model — meaning these can be worn as functional eye protection, not just as costume pieces.
How metal and plastic frames hold up
- The metal in a hybrid frame almost always serves as the hinge insert — a design choice backed by materials engineering that sees metal hinges as 'generally stronger and more durable than plastic hinges,' considerably reducing the risk of temple detachment, a common catastrophic failure on ultra-cheap sunglasses.
- Unlike all-plastic frames that rely on memory for fit, metal temple arms — which a metal-plastic frame like this typically employs — can be manually bent and adjusted by an optician for a customized, slip-free grip behind the ears, a small but meaningful advantage that extends the wearable life of a $29 sunglass by maintaining proper alignment through daily handling.
- In line with the wider category, plastic fronts like the Renold's are inherently less dense than metal alloys — the American Academy of Ophthalmology cites plastic frames as the most popular choice largely because they are 'inexpensive' and 'lightweight' — which reduces downward nose-bridge pressure during multi-hour wear, a critical comfort factor at any price.
Can budget sunglasses really deliver 100% UV protection?
- The brown or silver tint of these round sunglasses improves visual comfort but has zero bearing on UV safety — the lens's UV-absorbing additive is colorless and undetectable to the eye; wearing dark lenses without a UV filter would actually be more dangerous than wearing none because pupil dilation increases UV intake, which makes the '100% UV protection' on this frame the spec that matters, not how dark it looks.
- A '100% UV protection' label that doesn't specify UV400 can mean the lens blocks up to 380nm, leaving uncovered the 380–400nm band, which accounts for approximately 40% of total solar UV exposure — the highest-energy UVA that penetrates deepest into the eye; a pair that meets UV400 closes that gap entirely, which is why optometrists recommend looking for that mark even at low price points.
- In both the U.S. and Canada, a '100% UV protection' label is tied to mandatory testing standards — the FDA requires that non-prescription sunglasses block 100% of UVA/UVB rays up to at least 380nm, and the brand's claim on this Le 31 pair is legally accountable rather than a marketing gimmick, which makes budget sunglasses a trustworthily safer choice than uncertified no-label shades.

Missing nose cushion
When I received my glasses they didn't come with the cushioning for the brim of the glasses that sits on your nose. They are almost sharp and the glasses are un wearable without them
