Product Insights
The Malibu Shield Sunglasses by Le 31 offer 100% UV protection (UVA/UVB, UV400) via a one-piece wraparound shield lens that intercepts side-entry light to reduce peripheral glare, with a mirror coating reflecting 10–60% more light than standard tint while hiding the wearer's eyes, at $29—half the price of a $55 Knockaround Campeones. The tradeoff: the mirror coating reduces brightness but lacks polarization, so it does not block glare from horizontal surfaces. With proper storage in a hard case, avoiding heat, and cleaning, the frame's lifespan roughly doubles. Designed in Canada as a Simons-exclusive label.
- Value
At $29, it costs half the price of the $55 Knockaround Campeones and, with proper storage and cleaning, lasts multiple seasons.
Why this is supported
The Malibu Shield sells for

Simple practices like storing them in a protective case, cleaning the lenses with a soft cloth, and avoiding exposure to extreme temperatures can significantly extend their lifespan.

water and mild dish soap, then drying with a microfiber cloth rather than paper towels, prevents micro-scratches on the reflective coating and plastic frame.
- Lens
Shield lens wraps to block peripheral glare; mirror coating reduces light 10–60% and hides eyes; 100% UV protection without polarized screen-darkening.
Why this is supported
The one-piece shield lens wraps around to intercept side-entry light, reducing peripheral glare. The mirror coating deflects additional light:
This can reduce the amount of light entering your eye by an extra 10–60%.
kiwikool.coThe coating also acts as a one-way mirror:
This makes them like one-way mirrors when observed from the outer side of the sunglasses.
allaboutvision.comAnd
They completely hide your eyes.
kiwikool.coThe lenses provide 100% UV protection (UVA/UVB). Because they are not polarized, they avoid the screen-darkening effect, making them suitable for use with phones and car displays.
- Light reduction
Mirror coating reflects 10-60% more light than standard tint.
Why this is supported
The mirrored finish on the Malibu Shield reduces incoming light significantly:
Unlike standard lenses that absorb light, mirrored lenses bounce light away. This can reduce the amount of light entering your eye by an extra 10–60%.
kiwikool.coThe one-piece shield lens also intercepts side-entry light that would bypass conventional sunglasses, enhancing the mirror's effectiveness when low-angle sun hits from the sides.
- Privacy
Mirror coating prevents others from seeing wearer's eyes.
Why this is supported
The reflective coating provides a privacy benefit:
This makes them like one-way mirrors when observed from the outer side of the sunglasses.
allaboutvision.com- Polarization
Mirror coating reduces brightness but not glare from horizontal surfaces.
Why this is supported
In comparison to polarized lenses, the mirror coating behaves differently:
They will reduce overall brightness but may not eliminate glare from horizontal surfaces as effectively as polarized lenses.
Are the lenses polarized, and how do they affect color perception and glare reduction?- Peripheral glare
One-piece wraparound lens intercepts side-entry light that standard two-lens frames miss.
Why this is supported
The one-piece shield intercepts side light that standard frames miss:
The one-piece shield lens wraps beyond a typical two-lens frame to intercept side-entry light that would slip past the mirror front surface
How reflective lenses handle glare and outdoor light — shield_design_for_peripheral_glareThe wrap geometry prevents side light from bypassing the mirror coating, ensuring the mirror's light reduction is not compromised:
This can reduce the amount of light entering your eye by an extra 10–60%.
kiwikool.co- UV protection
100% UV protection covers both UVA and UVB, equivalent to UV400.
Why this is supported
The temple marking '100% UV Protection' confirms UVA/UVB coverage. The glasses are not polarized,

Cool but have sharp edges
These are dope. On trend and look like other expensive designs. My only issue is that the lens that connects to the rubber nose piece has small sharp corners that hurt when you wear them for a fee minutes. I had to take a sharp blade to round out the sharp corners.
