Product Insights

Pierce Aviator Sunglasses by Simons' house brand Le 31, priced at 29 CAD and in stock, deliver 100% UV400 protection via non-polarized contrast lenses that prevent LCD blackout and windshield moiré while sharpening contrast on overcast days. The main tradeoff: non-polarization sacrifices polarized glare reduction but enhances driving clarity, while the ultra-thin metal-and-plastic frame, available in patterned brown or black, offers a contemporary tortoise-shell style but cannot be optician-adjusted, may warp under high heat, and lasts 2–3 years with daily wear. Fit is self-assessed—best for oval, square, and heart-shaped faces, ensuring lenses cover eyebrows and avoid cheekbones.

Driving clarity

Non-polarized lenses avoid LCD screen blackout and windshield stress patterns while driving.

Why this is supported

Catalog verified that the Pierce's lenses are not polarizing.

not polarizedAre the contrast lenses polarized?

. This means they avoid the problems polarized lenses introduce: when

Polarized lenses can also

reveal stress patterns in tempered glass, making sections of the aircraft's windshield appear as a distracting moiré or rainbow pattern.lensmartonline.com

Because the Pierce lacks a polarizing filter, drivers and device users enjoy clear vision without these issues.

UV protection

Provides 100% UV protection (UV400) independent of polarization.

Why this is supported

The Pierce provides 100% UV protection because the UV-blocking coating is independent of the lens tint or polarization.

The UV light protection is a clear coat; it's not actually the tint on the glassesksat.com

. This ensures complete elimination of UV rays:

Ultraviolet (UV) light damages the cornea and the retina. Good sunglasses can eliminate UV rays completely.science.howstuffworks.com

Even with contrast tint and no polarization, UV protection remains at the full 100% level.

Polarization

Non-polarized lenses avoid LCD blackout and windshield moiré, while blocking 100% UV.

Why this is supported

Because the Pierce's lenses are not polarized, they avoid two common drawbacks:

When you view one polarizing filter through another (your sunglasses), they can cancel each other out, causing the screen to appear black or dangerously dim from certain angles.lensmartonline.com

And they prevent the distracting stress patterns on windshields.

Polarized lenses can also reveal stress patterns in tempered glass, making sections of the aircraft’s windshield appear as a distracting moiré or rainbow pattern.lensmartonline.com

All while providing 100% UV protection, as confirmed by the UV protection analysis.

Contrast

Brown lens tint sharpens contrast on overcast days.

Why this is supported

The brown tint filters blue light. According to lensmartonline.com:

Enhances contrast and depth perception by filtering blue light.lensmartonline.com

This effect has a historical origin:

These solid color lenses are the foundation of the Ray-Ban legacy, developed in the 1930s for U.S. military pilots.visualfoodie.com

Additionally, the lens reduces overall brightness:

Fit check

Buyers can check fit by ensuring lenses cover eyebrows and avoid cheekbones; best for oval, square, heart-shaped faces.

Why this is supported

Aviators are intended to fit a specific way:

Aviators should fit snugly so that they cover your eyebrows but are not so big that they hit your cheekbones.wmpeyewear.com

This test helps buyers confirm the single size works for them. Additionally, face shape influences compatibility:

While aviator sunglasses suit most face shapes, they are particularly well-suited for oval, square, and heart-shaped faces.lensdirect.com

These guidelines together allow buyers to self-assess fit before purchase.

Frame care

The metal and plastic frame cannot be custom-fit by an optician and may warp under high heat.

Why this is supported

The Pierce's metal-plastic frame includes plastic components that affect fit maintenance.

Plastic: Minimal flexibility, higher risk of snapping.modernopticals.com

This limits the ability to adjust the frame beyond tightening micro-screws. Additionally,

Plastic: Can deform in high heat (car dashboards, direct sun).modernopticals.com

Proper storage is necessary to avoid warping.

Durability

Daily-use lifespan of 2–3 years, with warping risk and limited adjustability.

Why this is supported

Industry sources document that plastic-frame durability limitations apply to this hybrid model. Modernopticals.com reports a daily-wear lifespan of

Plastic frames last 2–3 years on average with daily wearmodernopticals.com

and warns that plastic

Can deform in high heat (car dashboards, direct sun)modernopticals.com

with

Minimal flexibility, higher risk of snapping.modernopticals.com

In contrast, iframes.com.au notes that metal frames are

Very adjustable: opticians can easily bend and reshape metal frames to fit perfectly.iframes.com.au

, underscoring the adjustability tradeoff when plastic is used in the frame.

Heat sensitivity

Plastic frame parts can warp in high heat.

Why this is supported

The plastic frame components are heat-sensitive.

Plastic: Can deform in high heat (car dashboards, direct sun).modernopticals.com

Store in a hard case in a cool place to avoid permanent warping.

Frame adjustment

Tighten micro-screws instead of bending plastic arms to restore fit.

Why this is supported

The rigid plastic parts resist bending and may snap under pressure.

Plastic: Minimal flexibility, higher risk of snapping.modernopticals.com

To restore loose fit, tighten the temple and hinge micro-screws instead of bending the arms.

Lifespan

Plastic frames last about 2-3 years with daily wear.

Why this is supported

With consistent daily use, the plastic frame section has a limited lifespan.

Plastic frames last 2–3 years on average with daily wearmodernopticals.com

Proper care (avoiding heat, using a case) can help maximize this duration.

Christina Y.

Bought the silver colour for my husband. Nice shape and fit. I took off one star because we were surprised to find the lenses are actually mirrored and that wasn’t mentioned in the product description. They still look great so we’ll be keeping them, but would have preferred if the lenses were gradient like how they appear in the photos.
