Product Insights
The Midi34 Edgar Curb-Link Chain Necklace is a Canadian-crafted accessory in implant-grade 316L steel with a gold PVD finish that resists fading and scratching over years, though not scratch-proof. At $55 CAD, it offers an accessible entry to curated accessories, typically priced $75–100. Its 4mm gauge and 22-inch length layer easily with various necklines, and the snap hook closure with a self-locking gate enables secure, one-handed fastening.
- PVD durability
Gold PVD finish resists fading, scratching, and peeling over years of wear.
Why this is supported
The PVD coating on the golden yellow variant is 20–30 times harder than standard electroplating and is fused at the molecular level into the 316L stainless steel surface, preventing peeling at link pivot points. The 316L steel's molybdenum content adds corrosion resistance, and its chromium oxide layer prevents the electrochemical tarnish that affects brass jewelry. Compared to gold vermeil, the harder steel substrate reduces micro-abrasion, and the coating withstands thermal cycling without delamination.
Gold-colored PVD coatings (commonly titanium nitride or zirconium nitride) reach Vickers hardness values between 2000 and 3000 HV, roughly 20 to 30 times harder than standard gold electroplating; for a 22-inch necklace worn daily, that translates to a finish that retains its color through shirt collar friction and gym sweat without developing the bald spots typical of cheap fashion chains.
How PVD plating holds up over time — hardness_under_abrasionPhysical Vapor Deposition fuses the gold-tone layer directly into the stainless steel surface at the molecular level rather than sitting on top with a mechanical or electrochemical bond, so it resists peeling and flaking even where the chain’s links rub against each other and against skin — a common failure point for conventional gold-plated chains.
How PVD plating holds up over time — pvd_bonding_vs_electroplatingAdditionally, the coating is chemically inert, so the warm golden hue remains consistent for the life of the necklace.
- Scratch resistance
The matte PVD gold finish hides micro-scratches but is not scratch-proof.
Why this is supported
The necklace can be worn in water without tarnishing due to the inert PVD layer, but direct shocks or friction can cause scratches.
The physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating on the golden yellow variant yields a darker, matte-finished gold than traditional high-polish jewelry, creating a more industrial, low-key patina
Curb-link chain style and versatility — pvd_gold_tone— this matte patina helps hide minor micro-scratches that would be visible on high-polish finishes.
- 316L grade
Implant-grade 316L steel: hypoallergenic, non-magnetic, and corrosion-resistant.
Why this is supported
The chain is made from 316L surgical-grade stainless steel,
316L stainless steel is the same alloy specified by medical standards for temporary and permanent implants
Why 316L stainless steel matters for jewelry — implant_grade_biocompatibility, making it hypoallergenic and biocompatible for prolonged wear. Its corrosion resistance comes from molybdenum:
The 2–3% molybdenum content in 316L stainless steel gives it a decisive advantage over 304 in chloride-rich environments
Why 316L stainless steel matters for jewelry — molybdenum_driven_corrosion_resistance. In its annealed state, the necklace is essentially non-magnetic:
In its annealed state, 316L is a fully austenitic stainless steel, meaning this necklace is essentially non-magnetic
Why 316L stainless steel matters for jewelry — austenitic_non_magnetism. The low-carbon formulation prevents intergranular corrosion, and the snap hook is machined from the same alloy for consistent performance.
This chain uses 316L stainless steel, not the 304 steel common in budget chains.
The 316L alloy contains molybdenum, which gives it substantially better pitting and crevice corrosion resistance than the 304 stainless steel used in most budget chains, so this necklace can handle sweat, salt air, and daily wear without rusting or tarnishing the way cheaper chains do
Value compared to similar stainless steel chains — 316l_surgical_grade_stainless_steelOn the Golden Yellow variant, the PVD coating is a further upgrade:
PVD plating bonds a microscopic ceramic layer to the surface in a vacuum chamber, resulting in a gold tone that resists fading, scratching, and peeling far better than traditional electroplating; many brands reserve PVD for their $100+ pieces, so its presence at $55 CAD elevates the Golden Yellow variant into genuine everyday luxury territory.

- PVD coating
Gold PVD coating bonds at molecular level to 316L steel for durable finish.
Why this is supported
PVD gold coating is applied via Physical Vapor Deposition, which fuses the layer at a molecular level:
Physical Vapor Deposition fuses the gold-tone layer directly into the stainless steel surface at the molecular level rather than sitting on top with a mechanical or electrochemical bond, so it resists peeling and flaking
How PVD plating holds up over time — pvd_bonding_vs_electroplatingThe chromium oxide passivation layer on 316L creates an excellent interface for bonding:
316L stainless steel forms a natural chromium oxide passivation layer that PVD coatings bond with exceptionally well, creating a tough interface that prevents blistering and delamination
How PVD plating holds up over time — stainless_steel_substrate_compatibilityThe hardness of the substrate further supports the coating:
the Edgar’s PVD-coated stainless steel, with a substrate hardness of roughly 5.5 Mohs, supports the gold film from below, drastically reducing micro-abrasion and extending the time before any silver base metal would appear
How PVD plating holds up over time — comparison_to_gold_vermeilThis ensures the golden variant maintains its finish over time.
- Fit
4mm gauge and 22-inch length yield a curb link that works with various necklines and layers easily.
Why this is supported
The chain features a 4mm gauge, which at the narrow end of the curb-link spectrum channels the classic hip-hop silhouette without overwhelming. At 22 inches, the drop follows the standard men's length, ending just below the collarbone. This combination produces a sleek, elongated ratio that is office-friendly and layers effortlessly with other necklaces. The 22-inch drop also ensures the chain stays visible over a crew neck but disappears under a turtleneck, making it versatile across casual and formal settings.
- Clasp
Snap hook closure with inward-opening gate provides secure, one-handed fastening.
Why this is supported
The snap hook features an inward-opening gate: when the chain is pulled taut, tension drives the gate shut, preventing accidental opening. This design allows one-handed fastening and improves upon standard lobster clasps in this price range, adding daily-wear reliability.
- Finish
PVD coating yields a matte gold finish on the Golden Yellow variant.
Why this is supported
The Golden Yellow option uses physical vapor deposition (PVD), resulting in a darker, matte-finish gold that contrasts with traditional high-polish jewelry. This patina complements the stainless steel substrate for a modern minimalist aesthetic.
- Provenance
At $55 CAD, this Canadian-crafted curb chain is an accessible entry for a curated accessory, normally $75–100.
Why this is supported
The Midi34 × Marcus chain is part of Simons' Le 31 curation, a platform highlighting emerging Canadian designers. Similar curated pieces typically cost $75–100, but this chain is priced at $55 CAD. Moreover, its Canadian fabrication avoids overseas supply chains and supports local artisans, adding tangible value.
Research indicates that PVD plating is usually reserved for jewelry priced at $100 or more, making the golden yellow variant at $55 a notable value proposition for a fade-resistant gold finish.

4mm curb-link is thinner than 6mm+ statement chains.
Why this is supported
The chain's 4mm width

Curb-link chain style and versatility — 4mm_gauge_versus_statement_chains.
- Closure
Snap hook gate self-locks under tension and permits one-handed fastening.
Why this is supported
The snap hook closure is secure: the inward-opening gate
opens inward, so when the necklace is pulled taut against the back of your neck, the line of tension drives the gate shut rather than prying it open — the 4mm curb links' own weight and close fit create a self-reinforcing lock that stays secure throughout a full day of movement
Snap hook closure security and wear — inward_opening_safety_gate. Additionally,
the snap hook's push-gate lets you hook it one-handed with a simple forward press — on a 22-inch chain that sits over a shirt collar, this means you can fasten it by touch without having to take the necklace off and reorient it

Beautiful chain
My son absolutely loved this chain!
