Product Insights

The Black-Band Fedora from Le 31 is a lightweight paper straw hat with a 1.5-inch 'stingy' brim that creates a compact, retro-modern silhouette, flatters oval and rectangular faces, and shades mainly the eyes; it weighs 60–80 grams, breathes well for warm weather, and resists humidity but warps if wet and becomes brittle after 2–3 years of sun exposure, offering a value at $39 CAD below typical paper straw fedoras.

Verified claims

Brim styling
1.5-inch brim classifies as a stingy brim fedora from the 1960s.
Brim practicality
Narrow brim shades mainly the eyes and flatters oval/rectangular faces.
Value
At $39 CAD, it's below typical 60-80 CAD paper straw fedoras.
Weight
At 60–80 grams, it's one-third the weight of a wool felt fedora and breathes for warm-weather wear.
Silhouette
Distinct sizes give a locked-in fit, and the 1.5-inch 'stingy' brim creates a compact retro-modern silhouette.
Sizing
Fixed M/L sizes eliminate rear pucker; Medium 57–58 cm, Large 59–60 cm.
Structure & finish
Smooth, stiff construction resists fraying and fading while weighing only 70g.
Weather resilience
Resists humidity but warps if wet; sun exposure causes brittleness after 2-3 years.
Shape retention
Heat-set paper straw crown and brim maintain silhouette through storage and handling.
Water sensitivity
Shape holds in humid air but direct wetting warps the paper straw.
Aging
UV exposure makes paper straw brittle after 2-3 years but colour fades only slightly, and the surface resists fraying.
Water resistance
Paper straw is not water-resistant; it warps and can mildew if wet, and the brim holds shape but may crack with repeated flexing.
Sun protection
Brim halves shade coverage, exposing lower face.
Face shapes
1.5-inch stingy brim flatters oval and rectangular faces.
Crown height
The narrow 1.5-inch brim makes the crown appear proportionally taller.
Band contrast
Black band contrasts with crown, visually compressing the silhouette.
Face shape
Flatters oval and rectangular faces; may emphasize width on rounder faces.
Visual compression
Black band draws the eye to the narrow 1.5-inch brim, creating a compact silhouette.
Brim tradeoffs
1.5-inch brim provides half a classic's shade and flatters oval/rectangular faces.
Surface
100% paper straw with a smooth, non-fraying surface, heat-set shape, and crisp finish of fine hats at $39 CAD.
Style
Narrow brim with black band creates a sleek silhouette and adds perceived height.
Cleaning
Clean by brushing or with a damp cloth; never machine wash or soak.
Storage
Store in a cool dry place away from sunlight, ideally in a hat box, to maintain shape and prevent mildew.
Care
To maintain brim shape, keep hat dry and away from sunlight; never soak.

Poor stitching and manufacturing, straw sticking out everywhere

Jack S.

Unfortunately the top on this hat was folded badly before it was stitched so the stitching doesn't hold it together and doesn't keep the straw in the crease. The effect is that the top of the hat is just a bunch of loose straw sticking up. Cheap, poorly manufactured crap.

Un très beau produit.
