I have a RAINS that I use as a laptop bag and I love it. They def are Not junk. Super well made, presentable and professional. The straps are thin and silly though. This isn’t for hiking or bike commuting. The profile is shallow so they might not hold items that aren’t flat. Very water proof and I trust it holding gear in the wet. Lots of specifically made “basket bags” out there that might make things easier for ya.

Comfort issues and limited practicality despite good looks
Yes I did! The quality is good, but the straps are not comfortable especially when the backpack is heavy. The straps are too thin and don't distribute the weight well. Part of the discomfort may be due to me being hypersensitive (I'm on the autism spectrum), but the straps really bother me. In addition, the bag is pretty thin and stiff, so it can't hold much inside, and if the things inside don't distribute evenly, you can really feel the bumps against your back. I end up never using the bag as a school backpack. I only wear it when it's a casual day out and I don't need to carry anything heavy. It's a beautiful bag. Every time I wear it I get compliments and people asking me where I got it, so that's nice.

Disastrous waterproofing experience with the buckle rolltop
this backpack is the most disappointing thing I've ever bought. lol I'm laughing already at this review but I signed up for reddit today because I wanted to find a place to leave a real review... not waterproof AT ALL. and it has that incredible look with the front zipper shown with the awesome waterproof stitch, etc. However, I was in the rain 3-5min MAX and all of the contents were SOAKED because the back of the pack is not even kind of waterproof. In fact, the breathable material has stayed wet for almost 24 hours-- and its the kind of fabric like a towel, that spreads the wetness throughout the continuous lining/interior. ALL of my things were sopping wet. Thank goodness I didn't have my laptop in the back sleeve because that would have been first to go. What is even the point in covering half the bag with the waterproof material?! No where does it describe this in any thing online (including reviews, wtf?!). but considering I purchased in person, I didn't have access to leave this review on any "official" site. In person, it also said WATERPROOF on the tag, by a company known for waterproof items, so this is actually insane. Like they could have just written, "watch out, the back is NOT water resistant in any way." this is so silly. absurd. Don't buy it if you actually need water protection. Very disappointing and a totally unnecessary fail/lie?!

General impression of Rains as cheaply made compared to alternatives
As for Rains, I’ve never owned that exact rolltop, but everything I’ve handled from them has felt really cheaply made and very mass-produced. Looks good on the shelf, but the materials and build quality just aren’t up to much, especially if you’re relying on it for a proper commute in all weather. I have a couple of colleagues with the Rains backpacks, and I dont want to be rude to them and tell them, but as a bit of a backpack enthusiast... I think theyre very bad.
