Product Insights

This 19.75x27.5 inch tea towel from Simons Maison offers 100% organic cotton with no pesticide residues, priced at $12 CAD — undercutting typical organic brands — and features Canadian design with five cat motif pattern/color variants. Its main tradeoff is the need for cold wash, line dry, and no fabric softener, with absorbency reaching up to 25x its weight only after one to two washes when softeners are avoided; a sewn-in hanging loop preserves the rectangular shape during drying, and initial washing of brights separately prevents color bleeding.

Deep Research

Value compared to other organic cotton tea towels

  • Unlike many organic cotton towels that are sold in single-color packages or limited two-color options, the five distinct pattern/color variants available allow buyers to coordinate with kitchen décor across multiple schemes without paying a premium.
  • As a Simons Maison exclusive designed in Canada, the towel carries a local-design cachet absent from mass-imported budget towels, yet its 12 CAD price remains competitive with generic imported kitchen linens, offering a story-driven alternative without the typical markup.
  • At 12 CAD, the towel undercuts the $16–$25 range common for a single organic cotton tea towel from brands such as Coyuchi ($18) or The Organic Company ($18), positioning it as an accessible entry into certified-organic kitchen linens without sacrificing size or design.
  • Organic cotton typically adds 30–50% to fabric cost compared to conventional cotton, yet this towel retails for the same price as many non-organic printed tea towels from home décor retailers, effectively absorbing the eco-certification premium within a mass-market price band.
  • Where sub-$10 tea towels often shrink to 16 × 24 inches or less, this towel's full 19.75 × 27.5 inch span provides the generous drying surface and coverage typically found in $15+ towels, letting it serve as both a decorative accent and a functional large-format cloth.

Care tips for lasting softness and color

  • Skipping liquid softener or dryer sheets preserves absorbency — the towel’s primary function — since the waxy cationic surfactants in softeners coat cotton fibers, reducing capillary action and causing water to bead rather than be absorbed.
  • Washing this organic cotton tea towel in cold water preserves the printed pattern's colorfastness and minimizes fiber swelling, yielding less shrinkage and color dulling than warm or hot cycles would cause in untreated cotton.
  • Line drying or a low-heat tumble cycle reduces thermal stress on the print and prevents cotton fiber brittleness, extending the towel’s usable life and keeping the pattern crisp rather than cracking or peeling over repeated high-heat exposure.
  • A mild liquid detergent without optical brighteners or bleach maintains the vibrancy of the ecru base and multi-color print, because brighteners can alter the warm off-white backdrop and bleach can lift reactive dyes inconsistently.
  • Using the sewn-in hanging loop to air the towel between uses prevents the damp organic cotton from developing mildew or sour odors, which break down cellulose fibers and shorten a kitchen textile’s lifespan in humid environments.

The practical benefit of a hanging loop

  • Suspended by the loop, both sides of the 50 x 70 cm towel are exposed to air simultaneously, cutting dry time and helping the 100% organic cotton resist the mustiness common to folded or bunched towels.
  • Sewn into the edge trim rather than attached as a separate piece, the loop distributes hanging stress along the entire hem so it resists tearing better than a standalone loop after frequent use and washing.
  • Hanging by the loop avoids the uneven stretch that comes from draping over a bar, which can deform the rectangular weave — particularly important for a decorative pattern towel meant to look sharp between uses.

How organic cotton performs in the kitchen

  • Cotton inherently absorbs up to 25 times its own weight in moisture, and the absence of hydrophobic softener coatings on organic yarns means this towel starts wicking instantly — a benefit when wiping up spills or drying glassware without smearing.
  • Because organic cotton is typically finished without starch sizing or fabric softeners, this tea towel may feel slightly crisp out of the package but its water absorption and hand softness will peak after the first one or two machine washes as the natural fibers bloom.
  • 100% organic cotton is cultivated without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or chemical defoliants, so the finished towel carries no trace residues that could transfer to hands, dishes, or food-preparation areas during everyday kitchen use.

What the size means for everyday use

  • The 27.5-inch length easily spans the 18-inch dimension of a standard half-sheet pan with generous overhang, so bakers can use it to line a tray for proofing or to cover a bowl of rising dough without wrestling the towel into position.
  • At 19.75 inches wide, this towel is 1.75 inches wider than the classic 18-inch specification, which translates to more fabric for wrapping around individual wine glasses—a subtle advantage that lets you dry an entire glass by grasping its base and twisting, without having to reposition the cloth.
  • The 19.75 by 27.5-inch dimensions sit within a half-inch of the most widely adopted tea towel benchmark of 18 by 28 inches, so this towel will fold to the same footprint, hang on the same hooks, and handle the same everyday drying tasks as the vast majority of kitchen linens currently in circulation.

Q&A

1 answered
Are the bright colors resistant to bleeding when washed with other items?
Our tea towels are made from 100% organic cotton and described as easy-care, machine washable. While we haven't tested colorfastness specifically, we recommend washing bright colors separately or with like colors for the first few washes, as is standard for most dyed cotton items.
