Packing a hot lunch to go
Pack soups, chili, pasta or other hot meals to take to work or school, with the lid on to keep the food from cooling. A reviewer found food stayed piping hot for 2 hours and comfortably hot for 4, and that pre-heating the jar with hot water before filling added roughly 30 to 60 minutes of heat retention. The roughly 2.5-cup, 20-ounce size suits a single meal rather than family-style portions, the exterior stays safe to handle even with boiling-hot contents, and because the stainless steel jar is not microwave safe you will rely on the insulation instead of reheating.[2,3,4]
Keeping drinks and snacks cold all day
Pack this insulated container with a cold beverage, iced coffee, or chilled snacks when you're heading out for the day. The double-wall TempShield insulation is designed to keep drinks cold for up to 24 hours, and a reviewer reports cold food stays cold all day in the jar. It's a fit for commutes, workdays, or outings where you want refreshments to stay cold until you're ready for them.[2,4]
Transport a Full Meal on the Go
When preparing food to take on the go, this insulated container holds enough capacity for a complete meal, such as a soup and sandwich combo or generous chili portion. Its leakproof seal and design make it convenient for tossing into a standard backpack side pocket. The double-wall vacuum insulation helps maintain food temperatures, whether keeping contents cold or hot.[2]
Toting soup or saucy meals in your bag without leaks
Use this insulated food jar to carry liquid-heavy meals like soup or chili in a backpack or bag. According to one reviewer's testing, the silicone-gasket lid sealed tightly with both soup and water inside, with no leaks from a standard backpack side pocket. That reviewer also notes the lid is genuinely leakproof, so you can transport food without worrying about spills on other belongings.[2]
Eating straight from the lid on the go
The screw-off lid of this 20 oz insulated food jar doubles as a wide-mouth, leakproof bowl, so you can eat directly from it without packing an extra dish or hunting for a microwave. A reviewer notes you can also portion hot food into the lid to cool it faster or split a meal between the jar and lid for sharing.[2]
An occasional way to hold water when it's what you have on hand
One Hydro Flask owner describes using this 20 oz insulated container to hold bottled water on an occasion when it was all they had available, pouring in a 16.9 oz bottle's contents, which they said fit inside. Based on that experience, they found the container holds roughly 17 oz rather than a full 20 oz. The same person acknowledged that pouring bottled water into a Hydro Flask is commonly considered unwise, so this reflects a one-time, improvised use rather than a recommended routine.[1]

20 oz bottle holds less than advertised
In my experience, no - it only holds roughly 17 oz. One of those 16.9 oz water bottles fits in their perfect. And before anyone comes for me, yes I know it's stupid to poor bottled water into a hydroflask but it was a one time deal with all I had available and I noticed that it fit perfectly and it made me think.
