Product Insights
This set of two wood-and-sisal dish brush heads from Simons Maison offers effective scrubbing on non-stick and other surfaces without microplastic shedding, composting fully at end of life, but the sisal bristles soften after 4–6 weeks of daily use. Priced at 12 CAD (6 CAD per head), annual cost ranges from 36–72 CAD, comparable to premium disposables. The heads require rinsing, periodic deep cleaning with hot water and vinegar, monthly oiling of the wood to prevent cracking, and replacement when wood softens or a musty odor appears. They fit only Simons Maison brush handles, and while bristle stiffness can be partially restored with hot water and castile soap, the main tradeoff is a short effective lifespan for environmental benefits.
Verified claims
- Lifespan
- Sisal brush heads lose scrubbing stiffness after 4–6 weeks of daily use.
- Environmental impact
- Sisal heads shed no microplastics and are fully compostable at end of life.
- Scrubbing performance
- Sisal bristles scrub baked-on residues effectively without scratching non-stick surfaces.
- Cost per head
- 12 CAD set of 2 brush heads, 6 CAD per head.
- Care routine
- Rinse after each use, shake off excess water, and store in a well-ventilated dry area, hanging if possible; deep clean periodically with castile soap, hot water, or vinegar, and avoid soaking the wood or putting the head in the dishwasher.
- Wood treatment
- Rubbing a thin layer of food-grade oil into the wooden top every few weeks creates a hydrophobic barrier that slows water absorption and reduces the internal swelling that leads to cracking.
- Replacement indicators
- Sisal bristles lose stiffness after 4-6 weeks, but care can extend use; replace the head when wood around the threaded insert is soft or darkened, or a musty odor persists after drying.
- Surface safety
- Safe on non-stick coatings; powerful on cast iron and ceramic bakeware.
- Durability
- Bristles soften after 4-6 weeks of daily use; hot-water reshaping and periodic castile soap deep cleaning can restore some scrubbing bite, while oiling the wood extends head life rather than restoring bristle stiffness.
- Value
- 12 CAD for two heads (~6 CAD each), cheaper than equivalent wood/sisal replacements.
- Annual cost
- Annualized cost $36–72, on par with premium disposable scrubbers.
- Compatibility
- The heads attach via a central knob and are designed to fit only the Simons Maison dish brush handle.
- Maintenance
- Periodic deep cleaning and oil conditioning extend brush head life beyond two months.
- Bristle revival
- Hot water, castile soap, and vinegar can revive bristles.
- Wood care
- Oil the wood every few weeks and replace the head if wood around the thread softens or darkens.
- Exclusivity and per-head value
- The set is a Simons Maison exclusive, and its per-head cost is consistently lower than equivalent wood/sisal replacement heads from third-party kitchenware labels in Canada.
- Scrubbing texture
- The natural sisal bristles have a coarse, high-stiffness scrubbing bite closer to a medium-grit scouring pad than to typical nylon brush bristles.
