Product Insights
Duralex's Picardie small pink glasses, a 1954 design acclaimed as timeless as the Swiss army knife, offer a versatile, stackable set of four for $18 CAD that resists thermal shock up to 130°C and yields blunt pieces if broken, with pink from vanadium and titanium verified lead- and cadmium-free. However, recent batches have been reported to shatter spontaneously in dishwashers, a tradeoff against the decades of everyday use and thousands of dishwasher cycles that earlier users report.
- Heritage
Anonymous 1954 Picardie design ranked as a timeless classic alongside the Swiss army knife.
Why this is supported
The Picardie tumbler was designed in 1954 by an anonymous creator, as documented:

hwl.dk.
- Quality consistency
Shattering in dishwashers has been reported for recent batches.
Why this is supported

I've had one spontaneously shatter in the dishwasher. Duralex changed its oven a few years ago and that led to a lot of production problems, even bankrupting the company
u/fazalmajid in r/BuyItForLife. Buying from an authorized retailer reduces risk of receiving a bad batch.

u/ursulawinchester in r/BuyItForLife.
- Shattering risk
Buyers report rare spontaneous shattering, concentrated in post-2019 batches.
Why this is supported
Long-term users frequently describe decades of daily use without breakage, though a subset have experienced spontaneous shattering. One user notes:
I bought mine in 1997 - three different sizes (small being the ones pictured). I have broken maybe one glass in all that time.
u/FionaTheFierce in r/BuyItForLifeAnother buyer reports:
I’ve had one spontaneously shatter in the dishwasher. Duralex changed its oven a few years ago and that led to a lot of production problems, even bankrupting the company.
u/fazalmajid in r/BuyItForLifeThe tempered glass design, while giving a 2.5× strength advantage, also means that when it fails it disintegrates into small non-sharp cubes, similar to a windshield. Duralex states:
It is this same tempered glass that is used to make windshields which, in the event of an impact or accident, shatter into thousands of non-sharp pieces.
duralexcanada.caDuralex has not publicly addressed the shattering reports or provided batch identifiers, so purchasing from authorized retailers is the only practical safeguard. A Q&A source advises:
buying from an authorized retailer remains the best practice
Has Duralex implemented any changes in manufacturing to address the spontaneous shattering reported by users, and is there a way to identify if a set is from a newer batch?- Counterfeit
Counterfeit Picardie glasses from Amazon are more shatter-prone.
Why this is supported
User reports and expert sources indicate that counterfeit Duralex Picardie glasses are sold on platforms like Amazon. These counterfeits lack the proper tempering process, making them more prone to breakage and shattering. The only reliable mitigation is to purchase from the brand's official channel or trusted physical retailers.
- Stacking
Nests securely and stacks directly with 310, 360, and 500 ml Picardie sizes.
Why this is supported
The tapered silhouette of these Picardie glasses allows them to nest securely, saving cabinet space compared to straight-sided glasses.
I bought mine in 1997 - three different sizes (small being the ones pictured).
u/FionaTheFierce in r/BuyItForLifeThis long-term use demonstrates that the 250 ml size stacks directly with the 310 ml, 360 ml, and 500 ml sizes, and all share the same taper for a visually uniform column. Duralex positions the line as a mix-and-match system:
Renouveler les tables et les transformer au gré des envies : tel est l’objectif du mix & match qui rend chacune unique.
offrir-international.comThis philosophy encourages building a personalized stackable drinkware collection across sizes and colors.
- Longevity
Buyers report 20+ years of daily use and thousands of dishwasher cycles without breakage.
Why this is supported
Multiple long-term users confirm exceptional durability. One Reddit user wrote:
