Product Insights

Opinel's La Table Au Soleil Utensil Box Set delivers fixed-tang flatware replicating the No.8 pocket knife's Sandvik 12C27 steel blade (55-57 HRC) and slicing geometry, paired with olive wood handles that darken and warm with use. At 212 CAD for eight pieces (53 CAD per setting), it undercuts entry-level Laguiole while offering French craftsmanship from the same Chambéry workshop since 1890. The set's fork and knife each weigh 33 g for balanced handling, but hand-wash care, periodic oiling, and the need for a second No.8 knife for two-handed outdoor dining are tradeoffs; it is also too cumbersome for ultralight travel.

Verified claims

Blade specification
Blades are the No.8 pocket knife's identical 11 cm plain edge and Sandvik 12C27 steel at 55-57 HRC, now fixed-tang.
Patina
Olive wood handles darken and warm with use, developing a unique grain pattern over time.
Value
At 212 CAD, this set offers genuine olive wood and Opinel's French craftsmanship at about half the price of comparable flatware.
Cost per setting
53 CAD per setting, undercutting entry-level Laguiole knives often exceeding 100 CAD each
Materials
Sandvik 12C27 steel (55-57 HRC) and olive wood (Janka 2,700 lbf)
Design
Fork and knife have matching 33 g weight; knife replicates No. 8 slicing geometry
Outdoor practicality
Buyers report needing a second No. 8 knife for two-handed dining outdoors.
Care
Hand-wash and avoid oven drying to prevent wood cracking.
Weight balance
Fork and knife each weigh 33 g for balanced handling.
Carbon blade compatibility
Swappable with Opinel No.8 carbon steel blade; requires careful drying to prevent rust.
Weight parity
Fork and knife each weigh 33 g for balanced feel.
Manufacturing
Handcrafted in same Chambéry workshop as Opinel folding knives since 1890.
No.8 fit
Standard No.8 fits carry slot and blades interchange; a second No.8 required for simultaneous use.
Quality consistency
Set's knives mirror No.8's steel, geometry, and weight, with denser olive wood handles and same French workshop.
Portability
Buyers find the set cumbersome for ultralight trips, preferring a spork and single No.8.
Craftsmanship heritage
Family-made in Chambéry since 1890; the set matches the No. 8’s blade and fork weight and accepts its blades.
Outdoor use
Adaptable for picnicking, but weight and hand-wash care are tradeoffs.
Knife performance
Knife uses Sandvik 12C27 steel (55-57 HRC) and accepts a carbon blade swap for outdoor prep.
Cleaning
Hand-wash with mild soap and air-dry; not dishwasher safe.
Oiling
Periodic food-safe oiling restores handle luster.

Deep Research

The character and care of olive wood handles

  • Olive wood naturally darkens and warms with exposure to light, air, and skin oils; the varnish moderates this aging compared to bare wood but does not halt it, so each handle’s unique swirling grain becomes progressively richer and more pronounced, giving the set a lived-in character that records its history at the table.
  • Olive wood’s high innate oil content gives it a low affinity for water, which means the wood itself repels moisture penetration even before the varnish is applied; if the coating eventually wears in high-contact areas, the underlying wood is still far less likely to swell or warp from routine hand washing than common handle woods like beech or birch.
  • Olive wood’s Janka hardness of approximately 2,700 lbf makes it over twice as hard as North American cherry and significantly harder than hard maple (1,450 lbf), so the handles resist denting and scratching from metal utensil contact far better than most domestic hardwoods — they stay smooth and dimensionally stable through years of daily table use.
  • Olive wood has anchored French and Italian cutlery for centuries because its density and oiliness provided a durable, water-shedding grip long before modern synthetic materials — by choosing olive wood for the La table au soleil set, Opinel continues a regional tradition of using pruned or fallen wood from olive groves, pairing it with modern stainless steel for everyday service.
  • The factory-applied varnish adds an initial moisture and stain shield but is a surface film that can thin over time — restoring the handles’ smooth feel and luster calls for occasional rubbing with a food-safe wood oil, which nourishes the wood beneath the varnish and deepens the contrast of the grain without stripping the remaining finish.

How the value stacks up at 212 CAD

  • Genuine French olive wood flatware typically starts at twice this price; at $26.50 per piece, Opinel offers the warmth and unique grain of olive wood without the Laguiole premium, making real French craftsmanship accessible for everyday tables.
  • The Sandvik 12C27 stainless used in the blades is the same alloy found in $50+ pocket knives and French steak knives from higher-tier brands, giving these utensils better edge retention and stain resistance than the 410 steel typical of budget flatware sets.
  • The box set outfits four place settings for about $53 per setting, a configuration that would cost significantly more if purchased as individual Laguiole olive wood steak knives, which often exceed $100 per knife.
  • Each knife costs roughly the same as an olive wood No. 8 Opinel pocket knife, so you're paying for the materials and French manufacture, not a 'tableware markup' — the set simply extends the brand's 130-year value proposition to the dining room.

How Opinel’s knife-making tradition shapes this set

  • The Bon Appétit knife is a fixed-blade, full-tang interpretation of the No. 8’s blade profile; its 11 cm plain edge mirrors the slicing geometry that made the pocket version a benchmark for charcuterie and cheese, meaning every dinner cut benefits from a thin, acute edge rare in table cutlery.
  • The knife blades use Sandvik 12C27 hardened to 55–57 HRC — the exact specification that has defined Opinel’s iconic folding knives for decades — so this table knife retains a sharp, easy-to-hone edge far longer than generic flatware, and resists corrosion despite frequent hand-washing.
  • The Sylve fork is engineered to the same 33 g weight as the knife, an unusual parity in flatware that creates a balanced, uniform feel across the place setting and reflects Opinel’s deliberate design philosophy of treating each utensil as part of a coordinated whole rather than an afterthought.
  • Olive wood is roughly 30% denser and harder than the beech traditionally used in Opinel handles, and its natural antibacterial oils add functional durability to the striking, vein-like grain patterns; the varnish applied here seals the wood against moisture and stains, a practical upgrade from the raw-oiled finishes of the folding knives.
  • The Bon Appétit knife drops the Viroblock locking ring of the classic No. 8 in favor of a fixed tang, creating a smoother, more sanitary profile suitable for the dining table while still maintaining the recognizable slim handle silhouette that ties it visually to its folding ancestor.
  • Every piece is made in the same Alpine workshop in Chambéry where Joseph Opinel began forging blades in 1890, so the heat-treating and grinding stations that produce the No. 8 pocket knife also deliver the table knife — five generations of family oversight ensure the steel receives a consistent hardness and grind.

  • Negative experience with the picnic set

I bought this set and regret doing so - it's cumbersome. Get a metal spork and one Opinel knife and you're much more comfortable.

  • Steel choice and care tips for the picnic set

The picnic set is in inox steel and it is very usefull. You can swap the knife with the carbon blade the fit is smooth and it works aswell perfect. To process food on a camping trip i like the carbon blade more as it easier to get sharp with any kind of rough surface like a stone or a other steel part. The carbon blade cuts bread much better then the inox blade, this is my point ovf view. At home you can use any good quality wet stone, you only need time and care. As Opinel knives are made to use, they are in a high quality and they last long with a good result. You clean it after use and add a small amount of food oil on the blade to prevent rusting on the carbon blade. Dont dry the knife on a oven to prevent the wood to crack and dont store it wet. With this a Opinel can last many years and it will be a good tool all the time along.
