Product Insights

Opinel's La Table Au Soleil Utensil Box Set delivers fixed-tang flatware replicating the No.8 pocket knife's Sandvik 12C27 steel blade (55-57 HRC) and slicing geometry, paired with olive wood handles that darken and warm with use. At 212 CAD for eight pieces (53 CAD per setting), it undercuts entry-level Laguiole while offering French craftsmanship from the same Chambéry workshop since 1890. The set's fork and knife each weigh 33 g for balanced handling, but hand-wash care, periodic oiling, and the need for a second No.8 knife for two-handed outdoor dining are tradeoffs; it is also too cumbersome for ultralight travel.

Verified claims

Blade specification
Blades are the No.8 pocket knife's identical 11 cm plain edge and Sandvik 12C27 steel at 55-57 HRC, now fixed-tang.
Patina
Olive wood handles darken and warm with use, developing a unique grain pattern over time.
Value
At 212 CAD, this set offers genuine olive wood and Opinel's French craftsmanship at about half the price of comparable flatware.
Cost per setting
53 CAD per setting, undercutting entry-level Laguiole knives often exceeding 100 CAD each
Materials
Sandvik 12C27 steel (55-57 HRC) and olive wood (Janka 2,700 lbf)
Design
Fork and knife have matching 33 g weight; knife replicates No. 8 slicing geometry
Outdoor practicality
Buyers report needing a second No. 8 knife for two-handed dining outdoors.
Care
Hand-wash and avoid oven drying to prevent wood cracking.
Weight balance
Fork and knife each weigh 33 g for balanced handling.
Carbon blade compatibility
Swappable with Opinel No.8 carbon steel blade; requires careful drying to prevent rust.
Weight parity
Fork and knife each weigh 33 g for balanced feel.
Manufacturing
Handcrafted in same Chambéry workshop as Opinel folding knives since 1890.
No.8 fit
Standard No.8 fits carry slot and blades interchange; a second No.8 required for simultaneous use.
Quality consistency
Set's knives mirror No.8's steel, geometry, and weight, with denser olive wood handles and same French workshop.
Portability
Buyers find the set cumbersome for ultralight trips, preferring a spork and single No.8.
Craftsmanship heritage
Family-made in Chambéry since 1890; the set matches the No. 8’s blade and fork weight and accepts its blades.
Outdoor use
Adaptable for picnicking, but weight and hand-wash care are tradeoffs.
Knife performance
Knife uses Sandvik 12C27 steel (55-57 HRC) and accepts a carbon blade swap for outdoor prep.
Cleaning
Hand-wash with mild soap and air-dry; not dishwasher safe.
Oiling
Periodic food-safe oiling restores handle luster.

Source Threads

  • Negative experience with the picnic set

I bought this set and regret doing so - it's cumbersome. Get a metal spork and one Opinel knife and you're much more comfortable.

  • Steel choice and care tips for the picnic set

The picnic set is in inox steel and it is very usefull. You can swap the knife with the carbon blade the fit is smooth and it works aswell perfect. To process food on a camping trip i like the carbon blade more as it easier to get sharp with any kind of rough surface like a stone or a other steel part. The carbon blade cuts bread much better then the inox blade, this is my point ovf view. At home you can use any good quality wet stone, you only need time and care. As Opinel knives are made to use, they are in a high quality and they last long with a good result. You clean it after use and add a small amount of food oil on the blade to prevent rusting on the carbon blade. Dont dry the knife on a oven to prevent the wood to crack and dont store it wet. With this a Opinel can last many years and it will be a good tool all the time along.

  • Compatibility limitation of the cutlery insert set

I have one. Like it a lot. The set only works with the #8 (except #8 mushroom knife)
