Prairie Breeze Folk Arts

Winnipeg, Manitoba

Amina Haswell discovered broom making when she purchased her first handmade broom in Western Canada, in 2011. Fascinated by fibres, textures, and colours, she reached out to broom makers across Canada and the United States and began attending workshops south of the border, finally founding her studio in 2019. Since then, this broom maker has created a wide selection of brooms, brushes, and home accessories. Using traditional Western and Japanese methods, as well as others from around the world, the artist weaves raw corn straw grown on her land or elsewhere in North America. In addition, she collects most of her own sticks in the forests of Manitoba and other places in Canada, always looking for the perfect handle for each and every creation. A truly dedicated craftsman, Amina now teaches her art to develop and experiment with new techniques.
