Product Insights

The Pez Dispenser Art Print Jean-Michel Basquiat by Giant Art is a licensed open-edition reproduction on matte paper with an MDF frame, priced at 198 CAD. It critiques consumer culture through the T-rex Pez dispenser and crown symbolism alluding to Warhol and class inequality, but the print fades under direct sunlight and uses non-archival materials, making it suitable for short-term decor. Despite polarized opinions, it offers value at about $0.58 per square inch and is made in Canada, avoiding cross-border shipping, with proportional sizing for furniture about 25-26 inches wide.

  • Critique of Basquiat's 'Untitled Vehicles' print

Yikes this one's bad. Dude made some great pieces and some crap. This one's crap. I mean it's brilliant as commentary on commodification and group think/joinerism, but not sure that can be claimed as the honest intent when created in 1981. This is Kardashian art -- it's value comes 100% from the brand name and 0% from content. Everything that dude made is worth money now whether he intended it for sale or not.

  • Basquiat's worth vs talent debate

It's "worth" is absolutely what someone will pay for it. Now whether you think he is talented, that's a whole other conversation, and one where opinions are all you can have. So I would suggest, it's useless to mix up the two conversations. You can go at it all day about talent, but "worth" is very clearly an objective thing.

  • View that Basquiat is overrated

He was NOT innovative, he’s just a rebranded picasso. His artistic skill level was 0. His notoriety came from doing drugs with andy warhol

  • Identifying fake Basquiat paintings

They're positively fakes. The fact that there's numerous "black guy with dreads" caricatures gives it away. On top of that the color decisions and mark making is awful. Basquiat had loads of colors in prepared containers so if he needed a shade of green he'd pull it out. He did little mixing on the palette of his colors and painted more directly with these pre mixed colors. You can tell these colors come from a limited palette and the greens, oranges, and purples are all mixed. This gives less contrast and "pop" to the paintings which we associate with Basquiat. They're fakes.
