Product Insights

The Veradek Demi Span Grooved Planter is a Canadian-designed composite planter priced at $210 CAD, featuring a fluted matte finish and a removable shelf that allows depth customization but risks cracking under heavy soil or freeze-thaw due to an inner air gap. It undercuts concrete planters by over $100, with a 5-year warranty, and withstands -30°C to +50°C, yet requires base ballast to prevent tipping, winter drainage and elevation to avoid ice cracks, and tools to remove the shelf, while its 36-inch length and 28-inch depth support fast-growing grasses like Karl Foerster, though lighter colors show dirt and handling a filled planter is awkward without handles.

Verified claims

Cracking risk
The inner air gap can cause seams to crack under heavy soil or freeze-thaw.
Removable shelf
Removing the shelf requires a hammer and screwdriver; it can serve as a false bottom.
Weight
Empty weight 31.2 lb; filled over 200 lb needs equipment.
Moving technique
Dolly, caddy, or lifting straps enable relocation of the filled planter.
Stability
Base ballast is necessary to prevent the planter from tipping when filled with tall plants or in wind.
Plant compatibility
Karl Foerster grass grows 4-6 ft in one season in the 36-inch planter, ideal for screening.
Setup and maintenance
Position before filling, use drainage plugs, and replant via the removable shelf.
Design and value
The Demi Span features a fluted matte finish, Canadian design, stain-hiding dark colors, and costs $210 CAD.
Winter care
Drain planter and elevate off ground to prevent ice expansion cracks.
Air gap risk
Air gap between inner shelf and outer shell can crack seams if moisture freezes.
Warranty
At $210 CAD with a 5-year warranty and strong repeat purchases, it undercuts concrete planters by over $100.
Durability
Tested from -30°C to +50°C with a stone-like composite, designed in Canada.
Design and features
36-inch length with removable shelf and optional trellis; lighter colors show dirt more readily.
Production scale
Manufactured in a 35-person facility in Ontario, Canada.
Provenance
Canadian origin is marketed as a key quality differentiator.
Root space
28-inch depth and 62.9L volume prevent root binding for most ornamental grasses.
Inner shelf
Inner shelf customizes depth but risks cracking under heavy soil.
Weather resistance
Composite material withstands -30°C to +50°C and freeze-thaw cycles.
Drainage
Open plugs in rain, close in dry; before freezing, drain or elevate the planter.
Color maintenance
Darker colors hide dirt better; all colors resist fading equally.
Texture
The fluted surface texture has crisp, uniform grooves with a refined finish.
Handling
Buyers find lifting a filled planter awkward due to the lack of handles.

  • User shares experience with the planter's shelf and weight

I have this exact planter. That is a shelf and it’s meant to stay under the dirt so that water can flow downward and not cause rot. I honestly don’t think you need to remove it. The shelves in mine did seem to come out easily if I remember correctly, but again, I’m not sure you should need to remove it. One tip for you… Those planters get very heavy when they’re full of dirt. You may want to put it on a coaster with wheels, or move the planter to where it’ll stay before you fill it with dirt. There’s also no good place to grab onto the planter to move it so it’s a little awkward. I do love these planters though. I have 10 I think.

  • User warns about structural weakness in Veradek planters

I can’t comment on the Demi, but I have a long Block planter and I would veto it. It looks really nice, but the construction has a weak point in that there is actually an air gap between the container that holds the soil and the outside of the box. When the soil gets too heavy, the seams can crack and you can’t really fix it. There are some pictures of this in the Amazon reviews.
